The Inspector-General for Emergency Management will report annually on departments’ and agencies’ work implementing actions committed to by Victorian Government in response to IGEM’s Review of 10 years of reform in Victoria’s emergency management sector and Inquiry into the 2019–20 Victorian Fire Season – Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports.

Recommendations made through the 10 Year review are relevant to the findings of the Fire Season Inquiry - Phase 1, and are referenced throughout that report.

 

IGEM's monitoring of Victorian Government progress

At the government's request, IGEM monitors departments’ and agencies’ progress with implementing actions in response to its recommendations. This implementation monitoring activity is conducted under section 64(1)(ca) of the Emergency Management Act.

IGEM will deliver its monitoring reports annually by November, with arrangements for their public release at the discretion of the Minister for Emergency Services.

Victorian Government's implementation plans

Implementation plans have been established to support the government response to IGEM's 10 Year review and Fire Season Inquiry - Phase 1 reports.

The implementation plans provide detail on the implementation of these actions, reflecting the most recent of IGEM’s progress reports as well as additional changes to timelines or scope of actions recently agreed by government.

Community visits - December 2022

The independent Inquiry into the 2019–20 Victorian Fire Season identified a range of opportunities for improvement to how Victoria prepares, responds, and recovers from emergencies.

In December 2022 the Inspector-General for Emergency Management Tony Pearce visited select locations to catch up with communities significantly affected by the 2019–20 bushfires. These informal catch ups were open to all community members to hear and share information about how recommendations from the Inquiry are being implemented.

Response to the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements (2020)

In March 2021 the Victorian Government welcomed the findings of the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements (External link).

The government further supported the the intent of all the recommendations (External link) and the desire to continue to strengthen and improve emergency management outcomes, community-led recovery and enhanced disaster resilience for all Australians.
