The Annual Assurance Summary provides government with a high-level overview of assurance activities undertaken in 2017–18 by different organisations and independent bodies across Victoria’s emergency management sector.

In 2017–18, the Victorian community was affected by a range of emergency events. Some of the events of note were the:

  • SKM Coolaroo Recycling Plant Fire (July 2017)
  • marine pollution event in Warrnambool (November 2017)
  • statewide flood and storm event (December 2017)
  • Flinders Street incident (December 2017)
  • 2017 influenza season
  • South West Complex Fires/Cobden-Camperdown Peat Fires (March–April 2018).

IGEM’s third annual Summary also reflects another year of progress by the sector in implementing the State’s reform agenda.

This includes the introduction of legislative amendments to Parliament for new integrated emergency management planning arrangements, the reporting against performance standards for responder agencies for capability and response, and further work to reform Victoria's relief and recovery arrangements.

The Summary does not make any recommendations or create any additional layers of reporting for sector organisations.

IGEM prepares the annual Summary in accordance with the principles outlined in the Monitoring and Assurance Framework for Emergency Management

The Annual Assurance Summary 2017-18 was published on 31 July 2018.
